I kinda see this song as the first of Metallica's "elemental death" trilogy - Jump in the Fire, Ride the Lightning, Trapped Under Ice. It's also interesting to note that all songs relate to situations where death is inevitable due to being trapped, whether physically or because of the influences of other people or substances.
